Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (available in a 3-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack, 1-Disc Blu-ray, and 1-Disc DVD and Movie Download September 14, 2010)
Prince of Persia begins with the line “Long ago in a land far away”. Sound familiar? Sadly, a lack of originality isn’t the only thing plaguing the latest video game adaptation run through the ringers of Hollywood. The dialogue is stale and far too modernized (though the actors do give it their best), the overuse of slow motion nears a threshold of tangible pain, and the comedy relief intrudes upon both reason and sanity. Perhaps the most disruptive element of the film is its insistence on recreating the video game feel. The first-person blueprints of castles under siege, unrealistic action moves with accompanying CG effects, and obvious “boss fights” are just too much. Not to mention the location changes prefaced by titles like “Valley of the Slaves” and “Lair of the Hassansins”. Let’s hope there are no extra lives in the next level because “Game Over” can’t be too far away. Adopted from the streets of Nasaf by King Sharaman of Persia, young Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal) grows up amongst royalty and quickly earns his place as a mighty warrior and prince. As his brothers Garsiv (Toby Kebbell) and Tus (Richard Coyle) plan battle strategies, a spy sends word that the Holy City of Alamut has been supplying weapons to enemies of Persia. Taking matters into his own hands, Tus orders an attack on the sacred city and, upon its fall, Dastan encounters the beautiful Princess Tamina (Gemma Arterton). When King Sharaman dies under mysterious circumstances shortly after, Dastan is accused of his murder and must flee with the princess on a harrowing mission to clear his name. Learning from Tamina the true motives behind Alamut’s invasion, Dastan must embark on a perilous quest to stop an evil mastermind’s plot for ultimate power with a mystical weapon that can control the very fabric of time. Bonus Features Exclusive to Disney Combo Pack include CineExplore: The Sands of Time – Take control of the dagger and use it to unlock secrets behind your favorite scenes! Monster House is curiously fun, even if you don’t see it in 3D - which doesn’t add as much as you might think. Although mysteriously poorly timed for its debut (a July 21st theatrical release date), Monster House is a highly entertaining animated film; bring the whole family, but watch out for the very young kids who may be startled by some of the typical easy scare tactics employed generously throughout. A few days before Halloween, DJ (voiced by Mitchel Musso) is obsessed with spying on the disheveled and crumbling house which resides across the street from him, being carefully safeguarded by the crotchety Mr. Nebbercracker (Steve Buscemi). Strange and disquieting things happen to the unfortunate souls who cross Nebbercracker’s lawn, and DJ, accompanied by his unwilling friend Chowder, are out to discover the calamitous secrets that lie within the haunted dwelling. Along the way they encounter Jenny, a smart, cute and crafty Halloween candy seller, who reluctantly helps them devise an end to the possessed house. After DJ believes he’s accidentally killed the decrepit Nebbercracker, the three realize they must stop the beastly house from reaping vengeance on this year’s crop of trick-or-treaters. Of course, convincing others that they’re not making it all up proves to be a huge conflict of its own. The babysitter Elizabeth (Maggie Gyllenhaal) as well as the local cops Lister and Landers (Kevin Smith), are just a few of the quirky characters who unintentionally interfere with DJ’s ghost-busting adventures. Put on your 3D glasses and check out the 3D sneak peaks for Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs and Open Season! Rock Prophecies (available on on DVD September 14, 2010)
Rock Prophecies is a documentary is about photographer Robert Knight who managed, through luck, perseverance and the uncanny ability to discover talent well before the rest of the planet, to be in the right place at the right time – again and again. The film takes audiences behind camera for an up-close look at Knight’s 40-year career, photographing some of the rock world’s biggest legends in their most intimate moments. The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Elton John, B.B. King, Eric Clapton and Aerosmith have all been captured through his lens. However, Knight is more than just a famous rock photographer – he’s someone with a genuine passion for music and musicians. Knight was the first photographer to shoot Led Zeppelin in America, the first to shoot Aerosmith before anyone had heard of them and one of the last to photograph Hendrix’s final performance. He was also the only photographer to capture blues hero Stevie Ray Vaughn’s final concert performance. When Vaughn died in a tragic helicopter crash the night of the show, Knight refused to cash in and sell his photos for years. Knight’s story is much deeper than hanging out with rock stars and going to amazing parties. As Stevie Ray Vaughn boarded the helicopter that would take him to his death, he told Knight, “You’ll know me when you hear me.” Over the years as Knight reflected on Vaughn’s final words to him, he decided to search for the next major musical talent. When Knight meets the band Sick Puppies, whose video for the song “Free Hugs” became a global phenomenon on YouTube (with more than 80 million views and counting), he tries to assume the role of impresario, convincing the act to come to Los Angeles, where he introduces them to friends in the industry.
