And for both Chuck and Serena, the search for answers from the past brings far more than they bargained for. The Last Song (available on Blu-ray Hi-Def Combo Pack and DVD editions on August 3, 2010)

Cyrus plays Ronnie Miller, a seventeen-year-old piano prodigy. She hasn’t spoken to her father, former music professor Steve Miller (Kinnear), ever since he divorced her mother (Kelly Preston) and returned to the small, quiet beach community of Tybee Island, Georgia, his hometown. Moody and rebellious, Ronnie has stopped playing the piano, and she flatly refuses offers to attend Julliard. Against her wishes, she and her kid brother, Jonah (Bobby Coleman), are sent to spend the summer with Steve, which he hopes will finally give them a chance to reconnect. Ronnie’s attitude is a pall that hangs over the whole thing, as is Steve’s mission to rebuild a stained glass window from a church that burned under mysterious circumstances.

But what would this movie be without a romance? Here enters Will Blakelee (Liam Hemsworth), the hunky Volleyball player who’s also a mechanic and a volunteer for the local aquarium. Popular, charming, and annoyingly persistent, he soon gets Ronnie to drop her misery act, at which point they fall deeply in love. He eventually takes her to meet his wealthy parents, who, naturally, snub their noses at her in the most polite way possible. Will has his own tragic back story, although you’d hardly believe it – there are precious few moments in this movie when Hemsworth isn’t showing off a big dopey grin, drastically undermining his character’s personal problems.

Other dramas weave throughout the story, including a secret known only to Will and his best friend (Hallock Beals), a troubled young woman befriended by Ronnie (Carly Chaikin), and that troubled young woman’s boyfriend (Nick Lashaway), a good-for-nothing thug who enters and exits every one of his scenes as if he were drunk. Each could have contributed something meaningful had they not been so underdeveloped. A few light hearted moments are reserved for little Jonah, whose precocious dialogue and clever handling of money suggests the filmmakers were not inspired by an authentic ten-year-old. Consider a montage midway through the film, in which Ronnie tries on a number of dresses in a clothing store. In the annals of wardrobe montages, has there ever been one in which a young boy was an active participant?

Special features include an Alternate Opening Sequence, Deleted Scenes, a Set Tour with Bobby Coleman, a Miley Cyrus Music Video, the Making of the Music Video with Miley Cyrus and Audio Commentary.

Death at a Funeral (available on DVD and Blu-ray August 10, 2010)

death at a funeral

Perhaps it helps that it features a great variety of stars, all of whom are naturally funny. At the center of it all is Chris Rock, who successfully balances the screenplay’s use of slapstick comedy, witty dialogue, and quiet interludes, the latter surprisingly rich, if ultimately brief. He plays Aaron, who seems to have the weight of the world on his shoulders now that his father is dead and everyone is gathering at his home for the funeral. His wife, Michelle (Regina Hall), wants to get pregnant – on the day of the funeral. His mother (Loretta Devine) says nothing kind to Michelle and clearly favors her other son, a successful but financially irresponsible writer named Ryan (Martin Lawrence), who hasn’t lived up to his end of the deal when it comes to paying for the funeral. Aaron, jealous because of his own failed writing ambitions, is continuously reminded that Ryan was expected to give the eulogy, not him.

Before long, he’s approached by a dwarf named Frank (Peter Dinklage, reprising his role from the 2007 film). He has numerous pictures that prove he had been ... very, very close with Aaron’s father. Unless he receives $30,000 in compensation, he will expose his secret to the rest of the family. Other zany subplots are woven throughout the story, including the dead man’s niece, Elaine (Zoe Saldana), having to get a handle on her boyfriend, Oscar (James Marsden), who mistook a hallucinogen for a valium and is now wreaking havoc all over the house. At the same time, she has to contend with her disapproving father (Ron Glass) and her ex-boyfriend, Derek (Luke Wilson), who seems incapable of taking no for an answer. We also meet the crotchety Uncle Russell (Danny Glover) and a family friend, Norman (Tracy Morgan), who Uncle Russell hates for no apparent reason. In one form or another, both find themselves drawn into the rapidly escalating Frank fiasco.

The director is Neil LaBute, whose film and stage work has been defined by unflinching depictions of human behavior. Remember his previous film, “Lakeview Terrace”? Aside from being a genuinely thrilling ride, it was also one of the most intelligent, complex, and honest examinations of prejudice and relationships of recent memory. “Death at a Funeral” is certainly much different in tone, but it still benefits from LaBute’s affinity for strong characters and themes. Yes, they’re all greatly exaggerated, but not so much that we don’t see some degree of truth in them; we believe in the reality of Aaron’s personal and financial woes, we understand his wife’s persistence, and we can sympathize with anyone who has had to deal with an Uncle Russell. As they say, there’s one in every family.

Blu-ray and DVD special features include Commentary with Director Neil LaBute and Chris Rock, Death at a Funeral: Last Rites, Dark Secrets Featurette, Family Album Featurette, Death For Real Featurette, Deleted Scenes, and Outtakes.

Tom and Jerry Meet Sherlock Holmes (available on DVD and Blu-ray August 24, 2010)

Fun is elementary when cat-and-mouse cutups try to outsleuth the great detective in this all new original movie!
Jewel heists around the city of London befuddle Scotland Yard, and the beautiful singer Red is framed for the crook. Only the legendary Sherlock Holmes can find the real thief with the help of his assistant Dr. Watson – and of course, Tom and Jerry. But finding clues and cracking the case will be elementary compared to keeping the peace between these raucous rivals as they scamper, scurry, scoot and speed along the streets, alleys and rooftops in the name of justice. Familiar friends Tuffy, Butch, Droopy an many more cleverly round out the motley crew of characters and possible suspects in this brilliant fusion of classic detection and energetic animation!

Special Features include How to Draw Tom and Jerry: Your Favorite Cat and Mouse Made Easy Through a Professional Illustrator’s Step-by-Step Instructions.
